Floral Quilt #1
12"x18"

This is my 1st attempt at an art quilt. The colors are done by airbrush and then the black quilting done by free motion for the thin lines and a satin stitch for the heavier lines.

Date: August 2000
Fall Leaves Quilt
Fall 2000

This process is similar to the floral quilt posted however I used fabric piecing in response to other quilters. I figured not everyone paints and if I wanted everyone to be able to do this, I should see if it would work by just piecing. It does.

The detail of this quilt is pictured below.

Feeling Frosty
Winter 2000

This quilt is 18"x18" just as the Fall Leaves quilt is. This is the second in the 4 Seasons Series, I plan to complete this spring.
In this quilt I airbrushed some of the fabrics, then pieced them together to give the viewer the feeling of frost on a window...

Here is a collection of some of my art quilts. I've chosen to explore a variety of mediums and subjects in journey into art quilting. I started my journey after several attempts at traditional quilting failed. Fustrated but still loving textiles, I decided I should try going with my strengths and approached quilting from a painter's point of view. I did drawings and watercolors of the images I wanted to portray. Then drew the image the actual size that I wanted the quilt to be and began cutting, pinning, glueing, fusing, and sewing,as well as painting, airbrushing, and dyeing the fabrics. The quilt, Nightsky, is my very first larger quilt.
Whereas many quilters learn to quilt traditionally first, then move onto art quilting, I had to learn to "quilt backwards".
I now keep exploring new techniques, as well as mastering old techniques. I have learned from the traditional quilting world as well as the art world and art quilt communities. I combine all the things that I've learned to create the effects that I want.  I've found that the traditional quilting techniques make my work stronger and allow me to go forward with confidence in its construction. My art background allows me to break those rules, and explore new ideas.
Currently, I quilt professionally, providing custom art quilts & long arm quilting services to clients.  In addition, I also teach, screenprint, and embroider for individuals and organizations.

Oriental Influence, 2000.

This was one of the many quilts created in the fall of 2000. The variety of color in this quilt is done by applying textile paints with my airbrush. There is only 3 different fabrics in this entire quilt.
