Art Quilt Gallery #3
Red Hawaii
2002, 28x28" - Sold

Red Hawaii is based on traditional Hawaiian applique designs. It is stitched by hand using needle turn applique and quilted using traditional "echo quilting". The design is cut out similar to cutting out paper snowflakes, pinned to the background fabric and stitched down by turning under a little bit of fabric with each stitch to create a finished edge.
Red Hawaii departs from the traditional in it's overall design, as it does not use traditional Hawaiian symbols. It also uses a wild swirling print for the applique piece, rather than a solid color fabric. This was a wonderful quilt to take with me to work on. You should have seen some of the looks I got when they saw the color combination, but the point of it is to be striking and high contrast. " Ah, Success!" A detail of this quilt can be seen below.
